Friday October 20th was the Cross Country NSAA State Championships held at the Kearney Country Club. The weather was breezy but very comfortable. Class D boy’s race started at 3:00 with a field of 150 runners.
Osmond Tigers junior Jared Bessmer and freshman Johnson Chishiba were included in the field. Both got off the line well with the front runners. Jared had made it to the first mile in 5:33 and was in 32nd place. Johnson was clocked at 5:34 and was in 36th place. Positioning of the runners changes a lot between the first and second mile. Jared had fallen back to 55th place and Johnson 62nd place.
The final mile is where runners set themselves up for the kick to the finish. Again runners pass each other and are passed. Jared ran past a runner from Filmore Central on his way to the finish line. He finished in 60th place in a time of 18:55.1. Johnson was closing on two runners, one from BRLD and the other from Paxton all while staying ahead of Sutherland and Red Cloud/Blue Hill. He placed 71st in a time of 19:11.1.
“Both Jared and Johnson ran well in the large quality field” praised Coach Joe Ortmeier. “ They got out well, maintained their pace and gave it all on the way to the finish. I’m very proud of both of them.”
The Tigers graduate two seniors Ethan Pfanstiel and Alex Kumm, but return most of the boy’s team and all of the girls. “It was a very good season for the Osmond Tigers and next year can be even better!”
