Thursday October 13th the Osmond cross country teams traveled to the Ainsworth Municipal Golf Course for the District D-4 meet. The wind was a big factor in the day as a steady 30 mph increased to 50 mph gusts. Sophomore Keli Aschoff handled the conditions well as she started the race strong in the top 11 runners early on. Midway through she had dropped to 13th but extended the distance to hold on to that spot and qualified for the State meet next Friday in Kearney. Katherine Kerrigan of Ainsworth won the race in 20:23.5.
“Keli ran a smart race, knowing her position on the course, maintaining her pace, then increased her distance over 14th and 15th place before her finishing kick” praised Coach Ortmeier. “I was very happy for her since she was so close a year ago and now she is heading to State. Keli is the first girl in the cross country program to qualify for the State meet.”
The boy’s ran tough in the strong field. Robert Aschoff was the top finisher placing 18th, just .4 seconds behind Owen Vondra of Elkhorn Valley. Robert’s time was 19:29.6. Dominic True came in next for the Tigers placing 21st in a time of 19:51.9. Karter Johnson was the third Osmond runner finishing in 23rd place clocked at 20:00.7. Caleb Miller placed 27 in 20:14.5 and Gavin Geneski was next at 32nd in 20:31.5. Mason Hagan of North Central was the champion in a time of 18:03.0.
As a team the Tigers finished in 6th place. Sandhills Valley won the event with Plainview runner-up and West Holt collecting the last qualifying spot for the state meet.
“I was proud of the effort the boy’s showed” noted Coach Ortmeier. “They gave it everything they had and were spent at the finish line. They had a nice season winning a meet and being runner-ups in two others. We will miss our seniors: Robert Aschoff, Karter Johnson, Gavin Geneski, and Hudson Schultze.”
