The Plainview Invitational was scheduled for Friday March 31st but due to cold temperatures, wind and potential snow showers, was rescheduled to Thursday April 6th with an earlier start time. Though chilly at 9:30 the day turned out well.
The Tigers had two individual champions in the girl’s distance races. Senior Cali Gutz again won the 800 and 1600 meter races and sophomore Keli Aschoff won the 3200 meters. Cali was challenged in the 800 meters by a pair of runners but a strong finish earned her the win in a time of 2:36.50. Her 1600 meters was not that close as she took an early lead and cruised to the win in 6:05.72, 23 seconds ahead of St. Mary’s ‘hope Williamson.
Keli Aschoff started quick in the 3200 meters pulling away from the field early with the exception of Callie Fisher of Lutheran High Northeast. On the fourth lap Fischer passed Keli, but Keli stayed just off her shoulder for the next three and a half laps before Keli out kicked her on the final strait. Her time was 14:30.19.
Erica Heiman finished sixth in the 400 meters in a time of 68.16 and later placed sixth in the 300 hurdles in 56.03. She also made the finals of the 100 hurdles, but did not place. Erica was also a member of the 1600-relay team that placed third. She and teammates Keli Aschoff, Carriana Kumm, and Cali Gutz were timed at 4:47.54. The final medal winners were the 400-relay team of Sophie Gansebom, Anabelle Vinson, Abby Brown, and Erin Wagner. They placed fifth in a time of 61.00.
The best finish for the boy’s was the last event of the day, the 1600-relay team. The team of Trevin Larson, Hudson Schultze, James Doyle, and Alex Vinson finished second to Norfolk Catholic. Their time was 3:47.52.
The 400-relay team came in third in a time of 47.15. Team members were Alex Vinson, Trevin Larson, James Doyle, and Hunter Buchanan. Trevin and Hunter both placed in the 100 meters. Trevin was third in 12.19 and Hunter fifth in a time of 12.69. Alex placed sixth in the 200 meters in a time of 26.86, and Hunter also made the finals.
The 3200-relay team finished in fourth place in a time of 9:18.88 with team members Jaxon Vinson, Caleb Miller, Hudson Schultze, and Karter Johnson.
In the field events Hunter Buchanan placed fifth in the long jump with a leap of 18-9. Sophomore Carson Bolz made the finals of both the shot put and the discus but did not place.
“We competed well considering we had just run on Tuesday” Coach Ortmeier noted, “We were concerned about the limited rest and recover time but came away in good shape.”
