D-3 District Champions

Osmond track & field teams had a very good day at the D-3 District track meet at the Hartington Sports complex last Wednesday May 12th.  Besides the boy’s winning the District title, fifth time in a row, eight boys and three girls qualified in twelve events.

Starting in the field Spencer Hille hit a 20-foot 5.5 inch jump on his first attempt that held up through the competition. Pender’s Dylan Vogt had a 20-.5 mark for second place.  Bradee Gubbels took fifth place with a leap of 19-.75. At the same time Grace Gansebom was on the other runway and on her second jump of the finals hit a nice 16-2 jump which put her in third place.   She would be an additional qualifier in the long jump.  To qualify for state in individual events you need to be first or second in the nine district field, then after all time and distance comparison, the next six best marks also qualify.

In the triple jump Graysen Schultze stepped out to a 40-6 mark which was good for first place.  Second went to Kristensen of Wausa and Bradee Gubbels was third at 38-7.5. Again on the other runway Kiera Moes measured a 32-6.5 leap on her third jump in the prelim’s which held up for second place and a trip to Omaha. Winning jump was by Allison Weidner of Humphrey St. Francis at 36-2.5.

After winning the long jump Spencer Hille headed over to the high jump where he cleared 6-0 for an automatic qualification, but also finished in second place to Pheifer of HSF who cleared 6-2.  Senior Zach Huwaldt collected fourth place in the shot put with a toss of 41-8.5 and freshman Xander Brown picked up a sixth place medal in the discus.  Xander’s best effort was 106-2.

The first track event was the 3200-relay where the girls team of Cali gutz, Riley Wagner, Elisa Herrera, and Lexi Beacom finished in fourth place in a time of 11:42.69.  The boy’s team got out to a good lead on the strength of Johnson Chishiba’s  lead-off leg and Ryan Schmit stretched in out to Karter Johnson then on to Graysen Schultze who finished 10 seconds ahead of HSF. Osmond’s time was 8:50.24.  In the 400 meter dash Connor Gutz collected sixth place at 56.00.

In the final’s session Osmond started off with Erica Heiman placing third in the 100 hurdles in 18.25.  Kiera Moes made the finals but did not place.   Kaden Polt came into the 110 high hurdles with a good time and equaled it in the finals placing second with a time of 16.83.  The other qualifier was Baue of Wausa who won the event at 16.09.  Following the hurdle races Grace Gansebon placed fifth in the 100 meters in a time of 13.49.  Connor Gutz also placed fifth in the 100 meters and his time was 11.84.

The 800 meters saw Johnson Chishiba get out early and fight for the lead with Preister of Humphrey/ LHF.  Johnson moved away from Preister and extended his lead before having to out kick Schroeder of Wynot.  His winning time was 2:10.66.  Ryan Schmit ran well placing fourth in a time of 2:14.91.  In the 300 hurdle race Erica Heiman placed third in 52.94.  For the boy’s the 300 hurdles race was the event that propelled the Tigers to the lead for good.  Three Osmond hurdlers scored 16 points as Spencer Hille out-leaned Kaden Polt for second place and Owen Seversen came in fifth.  The winning time by Wausa’s Baue was 42.52, Spencer’s time was 43.76, Kaden’s time was 43.82, and Owen covered the distance in 47.35.

The 200 meters was next and Grace Gansebom finished in fifth place in a time of 28.45.  Zach Huwaldt placed sixth for the boy’s in 25.53. For the girl’s in the 1600 meters Cali Gutz held onto the Wausa tandem as long as she could before they extended and took the first two places, Martinson in 5:49.59 and Nelson in 5:49.91.  Cali’s third place time was 5:58.71 and was good for an additional qualifier.  Three Tigers scored in the 1600 meters.  Smith of Wausa won the race in 4:46.35, Graysen Schultze finished second in 4:53.76, Johnson Chishiba was third at 4:56.80 and Karter Johnson battled his way to a fourth place finish in a time of 5:17.25.    Johnson’s time was good enough to be an extra qualifier.

The boy’s 400-relay was bonus points as the team of Connor Gutz, Bryan Solorzano, Bradee Gubbels, and Zach Huwaldt hit all their hand-offs and Huwaldt cruised in at second place.  Their time was 47.40.  Hartington’s first place time was 46.22.  The girl’s 1600-relay team ran their best time of the year of 4:36.46 good for fourth place.  Team members were Riley Wagner, Erica Heiman, Grace Gansebom, and Cali Gutz.  For the boy’s Hartington-Newcastle got out to a quick start and led most of the race.  With a lap to go Graysen Schultze got the baton for the Tigers behind the Wildcats by 30 meters.  Graysen started to close on their anchorman by the top of the last curve and by the start of the strait he was closing fast and with 50 meters to go he was even and blew past.  Osmond won the race in a time of 3:36.86, nearly a new school record.  Hartington’s time was 3:37.56. Team members were Bodie True, Johnson Chishiba, Connor Gutz and Graysen Schultze.

“Congratulations to all the Tiger track team members for an exceptional day” praised Coach Joe Ortmeier “and to our State qualifiers who took advantage of their opportunities to go above and beyond their previous best efforts. Good Luck Wednesday and Thursday in Omaha!”
