Boy’s Champions of Winch Invitational, Girls Fifth

            Thursday May 2nd was the running of the Jim Winch Invitational sponsored by Winside High School at the Laurel-Concord-Coleridge athletic facility. The boy’s dominated the meet from the field events on.  The girl’s had a good day in the tough field.

          The boy’s started in the shot put placing first, second and fifth all with personal record (pr) throws.  Alexis Solorzano won with a toss of 43-9, Landon Stelling second at 40-2.5, and Zach Huwaldt fifth place with a mark of 38-6.  Later Alexis won the discus with a 121-4 distance.  Landon made the finals but did not place.  In the triple jump Graysen Schultze finished second (38-3.5), Justus Maertins fourth (37-7.25), and Ryan Schmit made the finals but did not place.  Aaron Chishiba was third in the long jump with a leap of 19-.75 and Nick Reikofski made the finals. 

          On the track Connor Guts and Zach Huwaldt both placed in the 100 meters.  Connor was third in 11.9 and Zach fifth in a time of 12.1.  In the 200 meters Aaron Chishiba was fourth in 24.9 and Huwaldt fifth in 25.0.  In the 400 meters the Tigers scored three runners as Anthony Heiman finished first (53.1), Justus Maertins third (54.0), and Connor Gutz fifth (55.7).

          In the 800 meters Johnson Chishiba out leaned Brogan Jones to win the race in a time of 2:11.3.  Anthony Heiman was third at 2:12.2. Osmond scored three in the 1600 meters with Graysen Schultze winning in a personal best time of 4:58.8.  Jared Bessmer was fourth at 5:10.2 and Joshua Gansebom sixth in a time of 5:13.7.

Mason Bykerk and Jared Bessmer were first and second in the 3200 meters in times of 11:01.7 and 11:05.8 respectively.  Both were season best times.

          Keaton Wattier won the 110 high hurdles in a time of 16.5.  He was also second in the 300 hurdles to teammate Justus Maertins.  Justus won the race in 43.2 and Keaton runner-up at 45.4 which is his best time ever.

          The Tigers scored in all four relays.  The Throwers Relay team won the event as Alexis Solorzano passed most of the field on his way to the finish line. 

Their time was 1:13.3 just .2 better than LCC.  Runners were Landon Stelling, Blake Bahr, Parker Johnson, and Solorzano.  The 3200-relay team finished in second place with their best effort of the season of 9:05.9, and runners were Johnson Chishiba, Mason Bykerk, Joshua Gansebom, and Anthony Heiman.  The 1600-relay team was also second in 3:43.0.  Team members were Maertins, Johnson Chishiba, Gutz, and Heiman.  The 400-relay team collected fourth place in a time of 47.4 and running the relay were Aaron Chishiba, Nick Reikofski, Bodie True, and Huwaldt.

          The girl’s top performer was Kennedy Johnson. Kennedy was second in the triple jump with a leap of 30-11.5, later she was runner-up in the 400 meters in her best time of the season 65.6. Mary Kahny had a fine day placing third in both the shot and the discus.  Her shot measured 31-10 and discus 94-10.  Makenzie Johnson was third in the high jump clearing 4-6 later she placed fifth in the 100 hurdles in a time of 18.2.  Haven Schultze finished in fourth place in the 100 meters. Her time was 13.7.  Riley Wagner placed sixth in the 400 meters in her fastest time of the season. She was clocked at 71.9.  She also made the finals of the long jump, but did not place.  Grace Gansebom also made the finals of the 200 meters, but didn’t place. 

          All four girl’s relay teams placed.  The 400-relay team finished in third place in a time of 55.2 which is their fastest this season and team members were Kennedy Johnson, Makenzie Johnson, Grace Gansebom, and Haven Schultze.  The 1600-relay team also ran a PR for fourth place.  Riley Wagner, Makenzie Johnson, Grace Gansebom, and Kennedy Johnson were clocked at 4:31.6. The 3200-relay team came in fifth in a time of 12:19.6.  Running that relay were Madeline Huwaldt, Kiera Moes, Bailey Schmit, and Lexi Beacom.  The throwers relay team came in in fourth place clocked at 1:23.4.  Team members were Hayle Krienert, Macy Aschoff, Lillie Gansebom, and Mary Kahny. 

          “It was a great day weather-wise, and the kids really stepped up and competed” complimented Coach Ortmeier.  “It was a good meet for our depth to come into play, also a good confidence builder going into Districts.”
