Junior Mason Bykerk was invited to run the 3200 meters at the 25th running of the Norfolk Track & Field Classic. His invitation didn’t arrive till Tuesday afternoon when the final scratches were made. Mason as well as other Tiger athletes were just off of the qualifiers’ list.
The field of twelve runners started fast but did thin out after the second lap. Mason moved up to sixth place after the fourth lap or first mile. The pace quickened again and Mason slipped back still running strong. He finished the race in twelfth place, but ran his second fastest time ever at 11:09.57.
“Mason ran a good race, running with the leaders, trying to give himself a chance at the end” complimented Coach Ortmeier. “It is always an honor to be invited to this special meet and have a chance to compete with the best in the area.”
