November Match of the Month--2020
As an Osmond TeamMates Mentor, Amanda Koehler can identify with being a positive role model in a young person’s life. She was successfully matched with a young person when the Osmond program began 7 years ago, and continues with that match today. Her mentee is currently in the 9th grade. They meet once a week during the mentee’s lunch time in the TeamMates room. They usually play a card or board game while talking about school subjects, their weekend plans or future goals that they have for themselves and as a match. Their goal is
to meet more than 25 times in the school year.
Amanda’s mentee enjoys sports, time spent with his friends, and learning to drive with his new permit. He enjoys Science and can very quickly solve a Rubik's cube! In the board or card game side of things, they are both competitive and have their own strategies to win. They both enjoy the battle!
Mentoring has made a great impact on Amanda’s life! It is one of the reasons she is now working at the school; she is very passionate about children and their success. Because the match used to meet after school, he has gotten to know Amanda’s kids a little as well. She is his mentor, but in a way, he is a mentor to her children even though he doesn't know it or hasn't been asked to be. She can tell her mentee looks up to her and enjoys seeing her around the school. He knows if he needs to talk or needs help, he can find her. Amanda says, “Knowing someone looks up to you and looks forward to seeing you just makes a person feel good. I like that about mentoring!”
As a community member, we need you to become a TeamMates mentor. Just like Amanda, you could have that wonderful feeling of doing something for someone else. Amanda encourages everyone to become a mentor and become involved with the youth of our community. Along with being a mentor, Amanda also currently serves on the TeamMates Board.
