January--Match of the Month 2020
Jill Heemstra is Osmond’s TeamMates “Match of the Month” and has been matched with her 6th grade mentee for three years. They meet once a week, usually for about 30 minutes on Fridays, in the TeamMates room at school. From there, her mentee decides what she wants to do during their time together. Most days she is very predictable and they spend their time playing games, like Bounce Off, Uno or Hangman.
Jill’s mentee is extremely kind and friendly. When the two of them are in the hallway at the school; many younger students are excited to see her mentee. She always stops to say hi. She enjoys sports and time with her family; even though, like many young people, she says her siblings annoy her a lot.
One thing that Jill has learned is how much kids have going on in their lives. They have so many activities and demands on their time. Jill thinks her mentee enjoys their meetings partly because she gets to decide what we do in their time together. She also thinks her mentee appreciates relaxing and just playing games and talking.
Jill has enjoyed getting to know her mentee and appreciates the information and guidance the Teammates program provides. Jill is currently serving a three-year term as a member of the TeamMates Board.
Community members interested in helping with the Teammates program can do so by mentoring, serving on the board of directors or donating to the scholarship fund. Please go to www.teammates.org if interested in becoming a mentor.
