February--Match of the Month 2020
Jennifer Wiseley represents this month’s TeamMates Match of the Month. She can tell you about the importance of being a positive role model in a young person’s life. She and her mentee have been matched for a little over a year now. Her mentee is currently a 7th grader.
Jennifer meets with her mentee every Monday morning before school starts. They have found that trying to meet at the same time each week is the best plan for them. Sometimes the school day, the mentee just “pops” into her classroom to say hi.
This particular mentee loves reading, writing and drawing. In the past year, Jennifer has discovered that her mentee is a sweet girl with a kind and giving heart.
From their relationship, Jennifer says that her mentee has taught her that you do not have to have any special talents to have a positive relationship with a young person. Today’s youth are trying to navigate life, just like anyone else. Sometimes that can be confusing and difficult for young people. Jennifer believes that having someone you can trust, and talk with can really make a difference. She said, “mentoring is not something I ever saw myself doing, so I was really surprised at how much I enjoy it and how rewarding and fulfilling it has become, for myself as well as for my mentee.” She encourages everyone to be a mentor and become involved with the youth of our community.
Community members interested in helping with the Teammates program can do so by mentoring, serving on the board of directors or donating to the scholarship fund. Please go to www.teammates.org if interested.
