October Match of the Month--2019
Sarah Morfeld has been matched with her mentee since the Spring of 2017. They meet once a week, usually for about 30 minutes on Wednesday mornings, in the TeamMates room at school. From there, her mentee decides what she wants to do during their time together. Most days she is very predictable and they spend their time together in the gym! They might play volleyball, soccer, practice their free throws, or even play a little basketball game! Sometimes they split their time in the gym with playing card games or board games provided in the TeamMates room. During their time together, they talk about how school is going and anything going on in the mentee's life. It is a wonderful opportunity to get to know a young person on a deeper level and develop a meaningful relationship that might not otherwise exist. Sarah’s mentee is in the seventh grade. She loves sports, especially basketball, and she loves movies! Sarah enjoys spending a small amount of time each week with her. She is constantly learning new things from her, whether it is about the latest movie or the newest card game!
“When many of us sign up to be mentors, I think we believe we are trying to make a positive impact in our mentee's life, which I know we do, but I don't think we realize the positive impact the mentee can make in a mentor's life! I strongly encourage everyone to consider joining this fulfilling organization and spend a little time with the youth in our community,” said Sarah.
Mentors meet one time per week at the school to “make a difference” in the lives of our youth. Mentors will develop a relationship with the mentee in the many ways that Sarah mentioned.
Community members interested in helping with the Teammates program can do so by mentoring, serving on the board of directors or donating to the scholarship fund. Please contact Program Coordinator Beth Manzer (748-3963) or go to www.teammates.org if interested.
