Wrestlers Compete at Stanton Invite
The Osmond wrestling team competed at the Stanton Invite on Saturday, December 8. The Tigers scored 48 points and finished in 12th place out of the 18 teams competing. Plainview was the team champion followed by Oakland-Craig and Clearwater/Orchard. The Tigers had three individual place winners with Mason Bykerk placing 3rd at 126 lbs, Alexis Solorzano placing 3rd at 182 lbs and Hunter Beacom finishing in 5th place at 113 lbs.
Mason had a good tournament placing 3rd at 126 lbs. Mason won his first two matches by pin before losing a close match in the semifinals. After his loss in the semifinals Mason came back to win his last two matches, both by pin to earn the third place medal. I know that Mason was disappointed in his semifinal loss but I was impressed with how he came back strong to win his last two matches.
Alexis also had a good tournament placing 3rd at 182 lbs. Alexis was in a 6 man round robin bracket where he wrestled the other five wrestlers in his weight bracket. Alexis lost his first two matches before coming back strong to win his last three matches to earn the 3rd place medal. Alexis did a nice job and seemed to wrestle better with each match ending the day with 2 pins.
Hunter Beacom was also in a 6 man round robin bracket. Hunter won one match to place 5th in the 113 pound bracket. This was Hunter’s first varsity tournament and I think that he was a little nervous but he still wrestled well, won a medal and earned points for the team. I think with some more practice and a little more confidence Hunter will do even better as the season progresses.
Patrick Vinson went 2-2 in the 145 lb bracket but just missed out on a medal. I thought that Patrick wrestled really well in his first varsity tournament and will continue to improve, win matches and place in tournaments as the season goes on.
Also wrestling for Osmond were Bodie True at 152 lbs and Nicholas Beacom at 220 lbs. This is the first year of wrestling for Nick and I thought that he did a good job of coming and competing well against more experienced wrestlers. Bodie also wrestled well, losing a close first round match despite the fact that he was wrestling two weight classes up from where he will wrestle most of the season.
Next action for the Tigers will be Saturday, Dec. 15th when they host their own Osmond Invite. Wrestling begins at 10:00.
