JH Tigers finish season at Battle Creek
J.H. Wrestlers Compete at Battle Creek Invite
The Osmond J.H. Wrestlers competed at the Battle Creek Tournament on Tuesday, Nov. 27. The Tigers scored 56.5 points and finished in 8th place out of the 16 teams competing. Norfolk J.H. was the team champion followed by Pierce and Plainview. This week the Tigers were led by Robert Aschoff and Alex Vinson who finished first and second in the respective weight brackets.
This was a very good tournament with a lot of wrestlers and I thought that the kids came out and wrestled well against really good competition. Robert Aschoff won four matches to win the championship of the 86 lb weight bracket. Robert had a tough draw as he defeated the second, third and fourth place wrestlers on his way to the championship. Robert finished the season with 17 wins. Alex Vinson won three matches on his way to the runner-up medal. Alex lost a close 4-0 decision in the championship match for only his second loss of the year. Alex has wrestled well all year often times against much heavier opponents and this was only his second loss of the year. Dominic True lost his first match of the tournament but then came back to win three straight matches to make it to the medal round. Dominic ended up earning 4th place in a very tough 94 lb weight bracket. James Doyle won two matches and just missed out on a medal in the 108 lb bracket. James also lost his first match of the day to the eventual 108 lb champion but came back with two straight wins before losing a close match to make it to the medal round. This is James first year of wrestling and he has really improved throughout the year and has become a very good wrestler. Kayson Maertins wrestled well losing two matches in the heavyweight division. I thought the Kayson wrestled well even though he lost both of his matches. In his first match he took a 1-0 lead into the third period before losing by pin. In his second match he was wrestling hard but got caught in a bad position and was pinned. I was proud of Kayson for working hard in every match. Also on the team but not wrestling at this tournament because of injury or illness are Caleb Miller, Xander Brown, Darren Kelley, and Bradee Gubbels.
This was the last meet of a very successful J.H. season for the kids. All the kids wrestled well and improved throughout the year. This year we had an overall record of 67 wins and 37 losses with seven of the eight wrestlers having a .500 or better record.
