Vikings prevail in conference tourney consolation
Vikings outlast Tigers in Conference Consolation
CREIGHTON—Down one point with the less than a :10 left to go in their Lewis and Clark Conference Tournament consolation game against the Wausa Vikings on Tuesday, January 31, the Osmond Tigers girls basketball team had the ball and a couple chances.
They couldn’t get the ball to fall in the hole and lost the contest 33-32.
“We played a very spirited game and fought right down to the last buzzer,” Tiger Head Coach Michael Brown said. “We had our opportunities to hit several shots at the end of the game, but just couldn’t get them to fall.”
The game’s first half was nearly a draw as the Vikings went into the third quarter with a two-point lead (15-13).But the Vikings emerged in the third quarter where they hit three three-pointers, including a bank shot from a tough angle.
The fourth quarter belonged to the Tigers who outscored Wausa 12-7.
While the Tigers seemed to play good defense throughout the quarter, they struggled to hit shots offensively and turned the ball over 28 times.
They were 9-for-55 (16%) from the floor, including a 0-for-7 performance from beyond the arc.
While the Tigers scored nearly half of their points from the free-throw line, they still left 15 points on the court; they were 14-of-29 (48%) from the line.
“We did not shoot very well from the free-throw line, which really hurt us in the long run,” Brown said.
Caitlin Kumm (Jr., G) scored 13 points; nine of these came from the free-throw line. Makenzie Johnson scored ten points.
Kumm, Johnson, and Kelly Schuettler all had nine rebounds each, while Andrea Schmit (Jr., G/F) added six rebounds. This was a bright spot for the Tigers who out-rebounded Wausa 44-38.
Schmit added five points and Emily Bolz (Jr., G) added four points.
Kumm also had 11 rebounds.
Shelby Stelling (Jr., F) and Shelby Aschoff (Sr., F) came in and played solid minutes. Stelling had five rebounds and Aschoff had two.
Mariah Stech (So., G) and Alex Brestel (Fr., G) each subbed in as guards.
The Tigers (4-12) will travel to Laurel to fight the Laurel-Concord-Coleridge Lady Bears on Friday, February 3. They host Winside Thursday, February 9 and then travel to Wausa on Friday, February 10.
