Tigers battle with H-N Cats
Tigers compete against Cats
HARTINGTON—The Osmond Tigers competed hard against their Lewis and Clark Conference foe the Hartington-Newcastle Wildcats 52-41 in Hartington Friday, January 13.
Overall the girls seemed to have a spark in their step throughout the game. They managed to hang with the Wildcats and battled back resiliently through much of the contest.
“We played with a lot of energy,” Tigers Head Coach Michael Brown said. “I saw a lot of good things by our team.”
This started with the Tigers playing well in both the second and fourth quarters. They outscored the Cats 14-12 in the second quarter and matched them 17-17 in the fourth.
Conversely, the Tigers had trouble in the first and third quarters. They were outscored a combined 23-10 in those quarters (11-5 in the first quarter, and 12-5 in the third quarter).
“Every time we battled back to within a couple of points, they would pull back ahead by 8-to-10 points,” Brown added.
The Tigers shot the ball well for the most part. They were 14-for-40 from the field (35%). They also hit 11 of their 15 free-throws (73%).
They had three girls in double figures scoring. These were Caitlinn Kumm (Jr., G, 15 points), Makenzie Johnson (So., F, 13 points), and Andrea Schmit (Jr., F, 10).
Johnson was 5-for-5 from the free-throw line and had eight rebounds. Schmit and teammate Kelly Schuettler each had six rebounds.
Emily Bolz (Jr., G) supplemented the Tiger cause with four rebounds and two points.
Mariah Stech (So., G) and Alex Brestel (Fr., G) each played solid defense against Wildcat guards.
“I am really pleased with the progress we are making and expect us to really be clicking in the next couple of games,” Brown added.
The Tigers (4-7) move on to host Clearwater-Orchard on Friday, January 20.
The Tigers junior varsity team had a difficult time against Hartington-Newcastle’s junior varsity. They lost 34-7 in two quarters.
They were outscored 14-1 in the opening quarter; then, in the fourth quarter, the Tigers scored more (6 points), but also gave up 20 points.
Mariah Stech (So., G) scored three of the team’s six points; she was 3-for-4 from the free-throw line.
Makenzie Johnson (So., F) scored two points on two free-throws. Mary Kahny (Fr., G) had the team’s lone basket.
