Tigers win Wausa Tourney

BY MR. SCHULZE on January 10, 2017

Tigers outlast the Cougars to win the championship at the Wausa Post Holiday Tournament

This marks the 3rd season in a row the boys have finished on top at Wausa’s tournament. Osmond cruised to a first round victory against Ewing, winning 75-23. Ten Tigers scored for Osmond that night, including a game-high 17 points from freshman Keaton Timmerman. Cole Moes, Blake Aschoff, and Alex Kumm all finished in double figures with 13, 11, and 10 points respectively. “This was one of those games where we knew we were going to get the result we wanted but wanted to ensure we played the game the right way, and I felt we accomplished that”, said head coach Todd Schulze. The Tigers finished the game with positive contributions from every member of the team, working together to accumulate 15 offensive rebounds and 16 assists.

Osmond had a rematch with Niobrara-Verdigre in the championship game on Saturday night. The Tigers faced the Cougars in the Verdigre Holiday Tournament, suffering a 2 point overtime loss in that contest. “I knew our guys were looking forward to another chance to compete against Niobrara-Verdigre. We felt we outplayed the Cougars in our previous matchup but just didn’t finish the game the way we needed to”, commented Coach Schulze. Both teams were efficient on the offensive end and proved to be difficult for each other to defend. The Tigers stuck to their game plan, forcing the Cougars to hit contested jump shots throughout the game. The Cougars were able to knock several of those shots down in the first 3 quarters but were unable to get those shots to drop in the 4th. “Niobrara-Verdigre seemed to be in a groove during the first half. Cole Moes had a huge impact on the game defensively getting the opposition out of their rhythm, when he began to guard the Cougar’s leading scorer late in the 2nd quarter and throughout the 2nd half”, added Todd Schulze. Offensively the Tigers set a season high in assists with 17 and cashed in with 10 offensive rebounds, as senior Brett Simmons hauled in 5 of them. It was an efficient night for the Tigers, shooting 51% from the floor, including going 5 of 9 from behind the three point arc. Cole Moes and Brock Johnson ran the show for us on offense. Cole finished with 20 points and 6 assists, while Brock added 3 assists to go along with his 16 points. Both were clutch for the Tigers in the 4th quarter at the free throw line, combining for 9 makes on 12 attempts to help seal the victory for the Tigers, as they finished the game going 17 of 25 from the charity stripe. Keaton Timmerman contributed in several ways, adding 9 points to the Tiger total and coming down with 9 rebounds. “I was incredibly proud of the way we competed throughout the game. We remained calm during the entire contest and executed our game plan to get a much needed victory over a quality C2 opponent,” stated Coach Schulze.
